Squishy toys — those soft, slow-rising, glittery little creatures kids love to squeeze — have become hugely popular. They look cute, they're satisfying to squish, and they photograph beautifully. But at KidsPitara, we've made a deliberate choice not to stock them. Here's why, and what we offer instead that gives kids the same fun without the risk.
The Hidden Risks of Squishy Toys
They can burst and leak harmful contents. Many squishy toys are filled with gel, water beads, or foam. Safety regulators have repeatedly warned that when these toys tear, crack, or wear out, they can release fillers that pose choking, chemical exposure, or ingestion hazards to young children.
Heat and cold make them dangerous. Several documented cases involve squishy toys exploding after being microwaved or frozen — a trend that spread on social media. The gel inside becomes extremely hot and sticky, causing severe burns that are hard to treat because the material clings to skin. Even everyday heat exposure (a hot car, a sunny windowsill) can weaken the toy's structure and cause it to burst.
Counterfeit and unregulated products are common. Safety authorities have flagged large numbers of squishy toys that don't meet children's toy safety standards — some containing lead, phthalates, or other unregulated chemicals, especially in low-cost imported versions. Some countries have gone as far as banning certain squishy toys due to harmful chemical levels.
They're not safe for younger kids. Because of small detachable parts and the risk of biting into the gel or foam filling, health experts recommend keeping squishy toys away from any child who might still put toys in their mouth — regardless of the toy's stated age range.
Chemical odor is a red flag. A strong chemical smell, an oily or overly sticky texture, or a toy that tears easily are all signs of a product that shouldn't be in a child's hands.
Our Decision
Given these risks, and our commitment to only selling toys we'd be comfortable giving to our own kids, we've chosen to keep squishy toys off our shelves. Instead, we focus on toys that deliver the same sensory, fun, and stress-relief appeal — bouncing, glowing, dancing, or squeezing — through safer, sturdier materials and mechanisms.
